How to Make Moving to a New House With Your Spouse Easier
Moving into a new home can be an adventure. It's often filled with getting new furniture, learning all about a new neighborhood, and sometimes moving to a bigger house with more amenities. When driving with your spouse, remember a few tips that can make the process a bit easier.
Communicate
Before you begin moving, talk to your spouse about where you want to move and locations you want to avoid. Make sure each of you will be happy with the move and what it will bring to your life. If you don't express your feelings, you might not be satisfied in your new home, which could impact the relationship.
Furniture
If you already have a home together or you're moving large pieces of furniture that you already have to your new home, make sure you use the proper tools for measuring. Items often needed include a measuring tape and a notebook to record the length and width of furniture and doorways. Before getting items out of your home and onto the moving truck, measure the doorways of your current home and the one that you're moving to so that you know whether or not furniture will fit. Make a list of doorways that might be too small and those that need to remove the hinges to allow furniture to fit through. You can also use your phone to take a picture of the areas where your furnishings are located so that you remember how everything is set up. Some apps and tools can be used with pictures to automatically measure furniture and doorways so that you have exact details.
Decorating
When settling in your new home, try to work with your spouse to make it your own. Decide on pictures to hang on the walls and decorations on tables. If there are specific colors and patterns you don't like, you might not want to include them in your home.
Packing
As you pack your belongings to move to your new home, consider getting labels on the boxes. You could also leave clothing on hangers so that it's easier to remove them from your closets and get them into the moving truck or your vehicle. If you're taking a dresser, consider leaving your clothes in the drawers and putting the drawers in boxes. This can make the dresser lighter while keeping everything in one place. When packing the refrigerator and freezer, ensure you have a cooler on hand so you don't waste food and have something to eat when you get to your new home.
When the day arrives to move to your new home, organization is a key factor so that you stay on schedule and easily move everything from one home to another. Talk to your spouse for ideas and to ensure that everything is completed without leaving anything behind.
